Get the President’s outlook on the future of CD-ROM and DVD Technology

Letter from the President

Dear Customer:

CD ROM, Inc. has rode the technology wave from the inception of CD-ROM technology, through early days when we sold a one-speed CD-ROM drive made by Toshiba for $1,000.00. We were there when a one speed Pioneer DVD recorder sold for $17,000.00 (and we could not stock them fast enough) to today’s 16 speed DVD recorders. Today, we announce the absolutely stunning new Blue Laser technology from Sony. Sony is on the forefront of a blue laser DVD which holds an amazing 23GB. Within a year, a double layer DVD will be marketed with 50GB’s followed next by a 100GB disc. This, we believe, is the future.

Many wonder when CD-ROM technology will peak and be replaced by DVD. When the United States Navy pioneered the paperless ship several years ago, some predicted paper usage would decline and be replaced by CD-ROM. What we see in practice is that paper is at an all time high in usage, and growing, and CD-ROM continues to grow exponentially. CD-ROM disc production last year was an extraordinary 12 billion units world-wide with DVD disc production @ 10 % of the marketplace. The bottom line is that DVD will continue to replace CD-ROM, and paper, but both will continue to grow in volume. It looks from our perspective that we are dealing with several decades of technology with the 12CM optical disc.

For the past four years, CD ROM, Inc. has manufactured two unique products for the Department of Defense (DoD) who need to place classified data on CD-ROM discs. These products are approved by the DoD to destroy all levels of classified data from Secret, to TS and above. The DX-CD™ product line currently has the world’s only portable and manually operated CD-ROM destruction device. With this mailing, we are introducing our second generation electric DX-CD device, code named DX-CD2™.

In early 2004, CD ROM, Inc. created a spin-off company called Digital Data Destruction Services. We located this new company in a 30,000 foot facility in Iron River, WI and currently provide the world’s first service bureau dedicated to providing an ISO 9002 compliant secure service to destroy commercial CD-ROM and DVD discs. Our client base includes one of the Top 10 software companies. We feel strongly that Federal and State legislation will soon compel banks, law firms, and hospitals to use our patented equipment or process for “end-of-life” digital record destruction.

Season’s Greetings!
